This recipe for authentic pico de Gallo, a salsa made with tomatoes, red onions, dill and fresh cilantro with a hint of jalapeno, will add freshness to any Mexican-inspired dish.
Table of Contents
Mexican food is known for its dipping and scooping. If you give me a bag tortilla chips with authentic pico de Gallo, I will be a very happy seniorita. It must taste authentic. The pre-packaged food must be free from sugars, and any other additives that may have been added to compensate for its lack of freshness. It's a tall order, right?
It's for this reason that I make it myself. It is incredibly easy to make and only requires a few simple ingredients. All of these can be found on the healthiest section of your grocery store: the produce aisle. This will elevate any Mexican dish, and your friends and family will be asking for more. You can't tell your friends that pico de Gallo is "rooster beak" when you translate it into English.
This recipe is a winner!
- The zesty lime and sweet tomatoes combine to create a delicious and fresh flavor.
- This recipe is versatile and can be served in many different ways. It can be used as a dip for chips, a topping on tacos or as a side.
- You can customize the recipe to your taste by adjusting the ingredients.
- You don't have to cook. This one doesn't require you to slave away in a hot kitchen.
- This recipe is made with simple, whole foods.
Is This Pico de gallo Healthy?
This salsa is packed with fruits, vegetables and spices. It's low in sugar and fat, but high in nutrition. Although it does contain sodium, it is in the form salt (and the amount can be reduced if you are concerned).
Red onions have anti-inflammatory properties, and jalapenos are rich in vitamin C, potassium and capsaicin (capsaicin is what creates that burning sensation and has been said to be an anti-inflammatory). Jalapenos, red onions, and potassium-rich jalapenos contain capsaicin, which is believed to have antiinflammatory properties. Fresh cilantro contains vitamins A andK, while lime juice is rich in vitamin C and has a slight tangy taste.
So... no. The scurvy won't be an issue.
Ingredients
All of these ingredients can be found at your local grocery store in the produce section. You can start by grabbing a knife.
- 3 cups diced tomatoes
- 1 cup diced red onion
- 1 jalapeno, diced
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- Half a lime, juiced
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
Instrucciones
Add
Add the tomato, onion and jalapeno to a bowl.
Add the black pepper, lime juice, and salt.
Adjust
You can adjust the taste.
Variations
- Pickled jalapenos are a great alternative to fresh ones.
- You can replace the tomato with pineapple. It may not seem like it will work, but the sweetness of the pineapple complements the spicy jalapeno.
- If you're looking for a salsa with a lot of protein, add black beans or pinto bean. You will feel fuller longer.
Serving Suggestions
Pico de gallo, which is not a specific dish but a salsa, can be served with many Mexican dishes. Here are a few I recommend:
Mexican Mini Bell Pepper Nachos : These nachos, which are low-carb and gluten-free, are begging for some pico.
Mexican Breakfast Casserole Pico de gallo is full of nutrients and is an excellent addition to any breakfast meal. This chorizo-based casserole includes it.
Mexican Quesadillas Griddled with Lentils : Quick and Easy Mexican Meatless Mondays dish.
FAQs
This recipe can be prepared up to one day in advance. It tastes even better after it has been left overnight.
It's possible that you didn't do anything in the kitchen to make your pico de Gallo taste bland. Use only fresh ingredients of the highest quality. If the tomatoes, which are a key component of salsa, are past their prime it can ruin the whole thing.
Red onions are sweeter than white or yellow ones.
How to Store Pico de Gallo
Cover the leftovers in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir it well before serving. If it has an odd smell, a slimy consistency, or a discoloration, throw it out. Add the cilantro only when you're ready to serve the pico de Gallo if you plan to store it. Cilantro will wilt quickly in storage and not last very long.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is organic food?
Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.
Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organics have more nutrients than traditional food, which makes them better for our health. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.
What are the advantages of organic farming?
Organic farming provides farmers with a way of producing food without using chemicals. Farmers don't need to worry that harmful pesticides could harm their crops or animals.
Organic farming also allows for more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers help to grow healthy plants and help to reduce the amount of chemical waste produced.
Organic farming is also sustainable. Organic farming is also environmentally friendly. Farmers often use composting to recycle nutrients back into their soil. This helps to reduce pollution and conserve valuable resources.
As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.
Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Consumers who are more informed about the dangers of pesticides or chemical fertilizers will demand healthier food.
This leads to a greater demand for organic food products. For these reasons, organic farming is becoming increasingly popular.
Is organic meat healthier?
You probably know the answer if you have been paying attention for a while. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
There are two sides to the coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow and requires more resources to do so. Organic food can be more expensive than its nonorganic counterpart.
Organic meats will typically be more expensive than those that are raised in conventional conditions. However, there are ways to reduce these costs without sacrificing quality.
Buy locally to save money. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.
Deals are another way to cut costs. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.
Consuming less meat is another way to save cash. The feed required to raise cattle can make meat production expensive.
There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.
Why is organic food important?
It is essential for our health to eat organic produce. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.
Organic farming uses natural methods of cultivating crops that are free from harmful chemicals. This results in fewer environmental pollutants and makes organic farming safer. Organic food is a way to help the environment and protect yourself.
Organic food has many benefits that go beyond health. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. However, organic fruits & vegetables aren’t treated with chemical sprays. This means they are more fresh tasting, last longer and look better.
It's because organic is healthy for you and the planet. Because it's not only healthy for you, it's healthier for the world.
Are organic foods good for your health?
Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. However, regular consumption of organic foods can have health benefits.
Organic food is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.
Also, there are fewer additives that are used in processing. Organic products are healthier than those that use additives during processing.
Studies have shown organic foods have more nutrients and antioxidants that conventionally grown fruits, vegetables.
While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming increases soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps prevent erosion and conserve water. Organic farms also require less energy and fuel, as they aren't treated using toxic chemicals.
Some people worry that organic foods are more expensive than conventional ones. However, prices can vary depending upon where you live. For example, organic apples tend to be more expensive than traditional apples.
If you take a look at the cost of a basket containing both types of fruits, you will see that organic is less expensive.
Do you want to go organic?
It depends on what kind of person you are. If organic food doesn't appeal to you, you shouldn't bother.
You can still buy organic food if your preference is for good tasting food. Organic foods are safer than conventional food because they don't contain chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Organic agriculture helps to protect the environment by conserving natural resources, and promoting biodiversity.
What are organic fruits?
Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.
Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.
Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.
According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.
The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), synthetic growth hormones and insecticides as well as synthetic fertilizers are prohibited by farmers.
Produces labelled as 100% organic meet all requirements. But, not all farms label their produce as 100% organic. It would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "
What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products will be the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
But they tend to be more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.
The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Statistics
- Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

Are there any negatives to buying organic goods?
The benefits of organic food are well known. There are some downsides to organic food. These include higher consumer price, lower quality standards, fewer options, and fewer choice.
You can't go wrong with wanting more options when it comes grocery shopping. We're conditioned to expect low-quality foods that taste bad. This is why grocery stores are stocked with the same prepackaged products.
But today, organic food is becoming increasingly popular because it offers better nutrition and tastes great. How can you convince people to pay a little more?
But you could still tell them that organic foods are more expensive. But that doesn't explain why organic food tastes better. It might even make them suspicious of your motives.
Instead, you should highlight its many benefits. Organic food is richer in nutrients and contains fewer pesticides and antibiotics. Plus, it's grown without synthetic fertilizers and herbicides, which means it's healthier for us and our environment.
Many people don't want to eat organic food because it is too expensive. They may find that spending just a few dollars per Week is worthwhile if they consider the health benefits.
The reason why organic food tastes better is that it's produced under strict guidelines that prevent contamination. Organic food is more likely to contain vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants.
Organic food is also better for you because it's picked later. This makes it easier to digest and fresher.
Organic food is usually cheaper than conventional food because it is grown organically by farmers, which means that they use less fertilizer and labour.
